Olympic Excitement: The Golden Years

The last time the Olympics were held in London was 1948 -- the first Games after a 12-year hiatus caused by World War II. The United States sent more than 300 athletes, most of them arriving in England on the S.S. America. In London, they found a city wracked by years of bombings. A food-rationing program was still in effect. The organizers could not afford to build an Olympic Village to house the athletes. I love the NYT portfolio of athletes who represented the United States at the 1948 London Games.

It's so amazing to see how things change, and some things don't... So excited for this year's games and some new stories for the books.
